“Pop Band Smash Mouth Reacts to Kim Kardashian’s Instagram Post Featuring 90s Hit ‘All Star’ as a Tribute to Late Frontman Steve Harwell”

On Wednesday, Kim Kardashian shared a series of selfies on social media in a gold bikini with the caption, “All that glitters is gold,” seemingly quoting a line from Smash Mouth’s hit song All Star. This post came just two days after the death of the band’s original lead singer Steve Harwell at 56. The band acknowledged Kardashian’s post on Twitter, adding the lyric that follows, “Only shooting stars.” While some followers criticized the reality star’s use of the lyric so soon after Harwell’s passing, the band endorsed a tweet that implies those commenting “too soon” did not know Harwell. All Star, which was a popular single from the band’s album Astro Lounge, was released in the spring of 1999.

The band posted a statement in memory of the late singer on Monday after his passing

Following the passing of their late singer, the band posted a statement in his memory on Monday. Smash Mouth was able to achieve great success with two platinum albums released under Interscope Records – their ska-fueled debut album in 1997 and Astro Lounge in 1999. Steve Harwell’s playful persona and alt-rock voice were a driving force behind the band’s humor-filled music. He even made a cameo appearance in the 2001 comedy film Rat Race and had a well-documented friendship with Food Network chef and host Guy Fieri. Tributes from friends and colleagues poured in after Harwell’s passing, including a heartfelt message from Fieri who expressed his sadness over losing his friend. Though Harwell retired from performing and left the band in 2021, they continued to tour with a new singer. Harwell had been diagnosed with cardiomyopathy eight years prior and had suffered multiple serious medical setbacks, including heart failure and acute Wernicke Encephalopathy. He will be cremated in Boise and laid to rest beside his mother in San Jose, California.
